Do I get to decide the location of the tree or bench?
We will provide you with the general locations where trees or benches are available. Once you have decided on the general campus location where you would like your tree or bench to be located, we will help you choose the specific location during our personal consultation process. The specific locations may be limited based on availability.
Do I get to choose the type of tree?
We do have a list of approved trees that can be planted on campus. We can work with you to choose the perfect tree during our consultation.
How big are the trees?
The trees we plant for dedications are 15 gallon size. Click here to see what 15 gallon size trees look like.
Where do I start for a tree or bench dedication?
Our website is designed to make it easy to sign up - it only takes three steps. Visit our how to buy page to get started.
Where do I start for a tile dedication?
Tile dedication requests cannot be done online. Please contact Suzanne Ullensvang atat sullensvang@ucdavis.edu or by telephone at (530) 752-8324, or visit our tile dedication page for more information.
How does the process work?
The first step is to visit our how to buy page. The website will lead you through the first three steps which include entering the information about the dedication type, the information about the dedicatee, the general area where you would like the tree or bench, and your dedication package. You will also enter your information, and once we receive the preliminary information from you, we will schedule a consultation with a landscape architect who will guide you through the process of choosing a specific tree and campus location.
What are the differences in the packages you offer?
The certificate and webpage displaying information about the dedicatee and the location of the dedication are included in every package Additionally, you can choose to add a brass plaque or have your certificate framed.
What kind of information can be put onto the plaque?
We are limited by size, but you can be as creative as you would like as long as the information fits onto the space. People often like to include the dedicatee's name, their contributions, dates, and even poems or quotations.
How large is the plaque?
The plaque is usually 4" by 6", although different sizes can be considered on a case by case basis.
What is the plaque made of?
The plaque is made of brass.
How often is the website updated? Can I send new information about the person if the dedication was for a wedding or a birth?
The website can be updated as frequently as you like. If you would like to include new information about the dedicatee in later years as well as updated photos of the dedicatee and the tree, we will be happy to update the information. The fee for updates is $25.00. If you are interested in this service email our tree and bench dedication team at dedications@ucdavis.edu.
Is there anywhere on campus that a tree or bench cannot be placed?
Generally speaking the entire campus is available for your tree or bench, although some spaces require dispensation through the consultation process and are available under special circumstances only. Once your consultation has been scheduled, we can review this information with you.
What is the life-span of the tree or bench, and if the tree dies or the bench needs to be replaced, do I need to purchase another?
The life span of a tree can be up to 100 years, and the life span of a bench is indefinite because they are constructed of metal. All maintenance (or replacement, if necessary) of trees and benches is included indefinitely in your first payment, barring any circumstances beyond our control.
Can I buy a heritage tree or a previously-planted tree?
A heritage tree is one that has been part of UC Davis since the campus was founded. Dedicating an existing tree is a possibility. Pricing for the dedication of one of these historic campus assets will be available in future updates to this website. In the meantime, if you are interested in dedicating one of our many historic trees or a previously planted tree, please discuss the option during your dedication consultation or by emailing our tree and bench dedication team at dedications@ucdavis.edu.
When I buy a tree or bench dedication, what am I paying for?
You will receive the certificate, dedication page on the website, and the engraved brass plaque which is installed on or near the tree or bench. Additionally, your tree or bench dedication pays for the perpetual care and, if necessary, the replacement of that tree or bench which becomes a permanent part of the UC Davis landscape upon its dedication.
When I buy a tile dedication, what am I paying for?
You will have your or your dedicatee's name placed on a wall adjacent to the mural, and your donation will be used to fund the UC Davis Nature’s Gallery ceramic mosaic mural.
Is the fee for these dedications tax-dedeductible?
Yes, the fee for your tree and/or bench dedication is payable to the Regents of the University of California and is tax-deductible.
Where will I find the tree or bench dedication plaque?
Tree and bench dedication plaques can be located next to the dedicated tree or mounted to the dedicated bench.
